Come in costume to the Sunrise Theater’s Silent Movie screening of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and receive a free popcorn. Saturday, October 26 the evening will begin at 6pm with cocktails and costumes followed at 7pm with the 1920 feature film. The movie will be introduced by author and silent movie historian, Tim Lussier with live piano accompaniment provided by world-renowned composer, Nathan Shirley.
Based on the gothic novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, the film is about Dr. Henry Jekyll’s experiments with scientific means of revealing the hidden, dark side of man and how he releases a murderer from within himself. John Barrymore stars with Martha Mansfield in this horror classic that was the motivating factor of Vincent Price’s acting career.
Tim Lussier retired as Director of Public Information for Moore County Schools in 2014. His website, SilentsAreGolden.com, has been one of the most popular silent movie sites for the past 21 years. Both HGTV and Fox News have also called on him to provide material and expertise. After 45 years of searching, Tim has amassed a collection of over 1,100 silent movies. “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” will be the eighth silent film Lussier has assisted in bringing to the Sunrise Theater since 2005.
Nathan Shirley is an active musician and composer. He has performed his music on both coasts of the US, in Europe, and live on public radio. He primarily programs his original compositions, including “Images,” featuring a series of piano solos played under a projection of the paintings which inspired each work. “The Black Cat” performance is a tribute to the work of Edgar Allan Poe, including piano, string sextet, soprano, and dramatic narration. Shirley’s concerts are often opened with an improvisation, in homage to the great composer-pianists of centuries past.
