Asbury Park: Riot, Redemption, Rock & Roll - Sponsored by Aberdeen Exterminating
The Sunrise Theater will be showing the new film, Asbury Park – Riot, Redemption, Rock & Roll, on May 22 at 7pm. This major theatrical event features interviews and the music of Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and Steven Van Zandt.
The film tells the story of the long-troubled town of Asbury Park, and how the power of music can unite a divided community. A once storied seaside resort, Asbury Park erupted in flames during a summer of civil unrest, crippling the town for the next 45 years and reducing it to a state of urban blight. The riots destroyed the fabled Westside jazz and blues scene, but from the flames of the burning city emerged the iconic Jersey sound.
Asbury Park returns Van Zandt, Southside Johnny, and Springsteen to the legendary Upstage, the psychedelic club where they got their start. Shuttered since the riots, the Upstage remained a perfect time capsule of the club which united Asbury and acted as a crucible for young talent. Now, as Asbury Park enjoys its long-awaited renaissance, it is music which has brought it back from the dead.
Director Tom Jones said, “It has taken Asbury Park five decades to rise up and stand on the brink of being something better than ever before. We should all listen to the wisdom of lessons learned the hard way and the music which fueled the revival.”
The Sunrise Theater’s screening of the film is made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Aberdeen Exterminating.
All tickets are reserved seating and can be purchased for $15 at the Sunrise Theater Box Office, online at SunriseTheater.com, or by calling 910-692-3611.
