National Theatre

The Sunrise Theater has partnered with National Theatre Live (NTL) for 10 years to bring the best of British theater to the Sunrise screen. With the Sunrise temporarily closed, both organizations have been challenged to find safe ways to keep audiences entertained.

The solution for theater fans is National Theatre at Home. Each week through April and May, NTL will be releasing one encore performance to the National Theatre Live YouTube channel. Each broadcast was filmed in front of a live theatre audience using state-of-the-art filming techniques, tailored to the play. From close-ups that capture every flicker of emotion, to sweeping wide shots of the stage, NTL ensures that audiences watching at the Sunrise, and now in their homes, always get the best seat in the house.

Sunrise Theater Summer Camps

Registration is open for the 2020 Sunrise Theater Summer Camps!

SumerCamp Logo2020bWith fingers crossed for good luck, the Sunrise Theater is reopening summer camp registration. Camps will be a little different this year – camp sizes will be greatly reduced, staff will be wearing masks and maybe the campers too, and hand sanitizer will be flowing. Weather-permitting, all camp activities and performances will be on the outdoor stage with plenty of fresh air and room for social distancing.

The Sunrise is grateful to the camp sponsors who have returned for a second year! Thank you to Sandhills Pediatrics, This Little Piggy Baby & Children's Boutique, and Rugg Rats Drop Off Daycare for their continued support.

Kimberly Fielder-Jones returns as Camp Director along with her staff of talented high school student choreographers and counselors. Kim is a graduate of Valdosta State University, an alumnus of Sandhills Community Theater, and currently teaches drama at North Moore High School. Her goal is to foster students’ self-confidence and their love of the theater arts. High school and college students with experience in dance, music, or theater are encouraged to apply for volunteer positions on Kim’s team.

Camps are divided by grades with some overlap to accommodate summer schedules. Each camper will learn acting, singing, and movement techniques as well as respect, public speaking and creative thinking. Camps are Monday through Friday from 9am – noon and end with two performances open to the public on Friday at 5:30pm and Saturday at 11am.

Camp registration is $150 per camp, and the application is available for print online or by contacting the Sunrise at

 eieioops topper

Camp One (June 15-20), for rising first through third graders, is E-I-E-I Oops, a barnyard musical.

On Farmer MacDonald place, the whole barnyard is singin'... rooster's singin' tenor, the mule chimes in on bass, the chicks are pretty good altos, and the sheep are all over the place! But wait! Something's wrong with Madame Cow... she just can't moo! Join the fun as the animals all do their part to save the day!

 Squirm topper

Camp Two (July 13-18), for rising second through fourth graders, is SQUIRM!, a creepy fun musical.

Spiders! Snakes! Bats! Worms! EWWW!! AHHH!! Join the wiggles and squiggles as the Itsy Bitsy Spider, Daddy Long Legs, Hook Worm, Snake, and a host of other critters take over the stage. But wait! No need to scream . . . just listen carefully and you will learn how things that make us squirm can be A-OK!

 pirates topper

Camp Three (July 27-August 1), for rising third through fifth graders, is Pirates! The Musical, a seafaring adventure.

Sail the rollicking sea, pirates all are we!” But ARRRR, and shiver me timbers! There's a stowaway on board! Perhaps the King of the High “Cs” will know what to do. Join this salty crew of colorful scallywags when Bluebeard, Yellowbeard, Whitebeard, Purplebeard - well, you get the picture - along with the No Beards hoist the Jolly Roger and set sail for a mighty adventure.

Registration is $150 per camp and will be fully refundable if the state does not phase in the opening of camps or if the Sunrise reschedules a camp to a date that is not convenient for the camper. Health and safety precautions will be observed at all times by staff, campers, and parents. A pre-camp parent meeting will be scheduled before the start of the first camp.

Payment may be made by check or credit card. Please mail your applications (availlable online) to 244 NW Broad Street, Southern Pines, NC 28387.
